Comment: I was born in Hoo in Broadwood House on the Main Road, I haven't been back to Hoo since my dads funeral 16 years ago, he is buried in your church. But my son has recently started playing football in Hoo, so coming back over this side of the river has made me look into Hoo, as it has changed so much since I last came. My children were really excited about seeing the house that I was born in and were hoping to have a look around, but had to explain that you can't just knock at someones door and look around.
I have just been on the Council Archives and found when I was christened. I may take my daughter to the church to have a look at the area, as she will probably really enjoy that.

Comment: Hi, my family have lived in and around hoo for years. I believe Bennetts Cottages were named after my great grandfather and Francis cottage was apparantly named after my nan. Many of my family now reside at your lovely church, two sets of great grandparents, a cousin and various other relatives. I would love to find out any information about my family and would be most grateful if anyone could help. My grandparents were Francis and Joseph Trice, who had 1 son and 4 daughters, Leonard, Susan,Carol,Jill,Christine. I am Christines eldest daughter. Grandad used to drive a tractor in the ploughing matches and worked at north street for Mr & Mrs Bucknall. I will always remember spending my summers in Hoo, with nan and grandad, catching the bus into hoo on a friday to do the weekly shop. They lived near North Street farm and the bus wasnt very regular, i remember the cockle man coming round in his van and the mobile shop. They used to call once a week. Long gone are the lazy days of innocent summers. If anyone has any information about my grandparents or their parents even , i would be most grateful. Many thanks.

Comment: I lived with my family in Hoo for two or three years in the late '50s. My father was Eric Cox; my mother, Mary Jane Cox, and my sister, Penelope. My name is Susan. I believe we left in late 1959. We were the first family to live in a small row of newly-built houses on the main road into the village, a short walk and on the opposite side of the road to what we called the "Rec," or playing field. There were swings and a self-propelled round-about where we often played. Cricketers used the grassy space as well--perhaps they still do. Our next-door neighbor was a doctor, Dr. Tilley, who seemed to have a thriving village practice and who, in the fashion of the day, had his surgery at the front of his home. Being Catholic, we did not attend the village church, but my parents were very involved in the RC parish, and I remember my sister's First Holy Communion was the first such ceremony held in the new Catholic church in the village. We were friends with Father Corley, the parish priest from the RC church in Strood, who was the prime mover behind building the church. We were very proud of the design, and the unusual, pale lilac bricks. I notice in a recent photo that a rather ugly front porch has been added--it doesn't enhance the architecture at all and I have to wonder what someone was thinking! Father Corley would be horrified, I'm sure. The village proper had two sweet shops, a newspaper agents' where we all picked up our papers and magazines, a pub called (if memory serves) the Five Bells, and latterly a shop which sold knitting wool and various sundries including things like rug-making craft items. A short walk from our home, on the other side of Dr. Tilley's surgery, was a tiny "Esso" petrol station. On the opposite side of the road was a large fruit orchard--pears, I think. Running behind our row of eight (I think) semi-detached houses was a small brook which was a magnet to me and my sister and our young friends in the summertime. We could walk along the back of houses quite a long way, and felt quite intrepid. I belonged to the Hoo Brownie Troop #1, which was based at St. Werburgh Church. We met at a small community hall in the village with our Brown Owl and Tawny Owl, whose real names I have forgotten (if I ever knew them!), but who were wonderful, interesting women. The bus service to the village seemed very good and frequent. My sister and I would take the double-decker bus to school in Strood, where we attended Ravenswood Priory. There was a bus stop only a few houses away from ours. My mother's housekeeper was a lady by the name of Mrs. Munn, who shared a home with her Uncle Joe in a row of Victorian terraced houses about half way between our house and the village proper. She would take me and my sister to the church graveyard while she took care of a family grave, pulling grass from the grave and leaving flowers on occasion. I remember the small children's graves, little rounded diamond-shapes, as if, said my mother, quoting Dickens, the children had been buried with their hands in their pockets. It's been very enjoyable to visit your site and wander through my memories of those days. The next time I am in England (I have lived in America for many years), I will make a point of visiting.

Comment: Being a member of Friends of the Church, I often run through the many comments which have been made. You certainly do a great job. I am enjoying the monthly Church Magazine"Beacon" which my kind Sister in Law, Margie Davison sends to me. Does anyone remember Rev.L.J.Walters? I used to attend the vicarage for confirmation lessons and then I was confirmed at Rochester Cathedral. His wife, son Christopher and daughter Rosemary always sat at the front of the church on Sunday mornings. As a child and it being wartime Mrs Leonard used to hold sewing lessons at the vicarage where we used to turn mens shirts into blouses (as the men had been called up to war) and their shirts were not in use, so we used them. Does anyone else remember that class. We always had a fantastic Garden Party in the Vicarage Garden yearly. Happy memories.

Comment: I hold A place in my heart for this my local church. My father
took me to the church for christmas services when I was a child.I went to church street school and used to walk through the chuch yard on the way home from school and I thought to myself way back then what a very special place Hoo church is. since that time way back in the late sixties I have been christened ,married, and my two daughters were also cristened there. and my fathers ashes lay in the church yard . The only problem is that on my last visit I took my children down to the church and found that some local mindless idots have broken some of the windows
I was upset to say the least.
and find it hard to forgive anyone who damages hundreds of years of history. And how do you explain that to your children ?

Comment: Found your site inspiring and very well constructed. The only improvement I can suggest is more pictures.
I am interested in Hoo St Werburgh because I have recently discovered that my GGGrandparents lived at North Street Hoo from 1820s till about 1852 and attended your church. George Goodhew & Dorothy Carley were married at Strood, but all nine of their children were baptised at Hoo St Werburgh and George was buried there on 28 March 1852. I can see your village & church on Google Earth, but can't read George's headstone!
Anybody studying the GOODHEWs or CARLEYs are invited to write to me. My Great Grandfather, Francis, joined the RN as a Boy 2nd Class when he was 14 years old and later emigrated to Australia. I was grateful to Medway Council for their wonderful CityArk site at http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/ which now has the parish records of your church online. I was able to find baptism records for all nine children of George & Dorothy. Marvellous technology. Keep up the good work.

Comment: I had the pleasure of visiting your lovely church in July 2005 and had hoped to go back but not to be this time. I am try to find the family history on John TURNER who married Susanna GILBERT 1814 in Hoo and had 15 children there.
For those of you that have mentioned on this site that you would like the records to be available, I have found a website that has Hoo records; http://cityark.medway.gov.uk - it takes abit of work to find the bits but scroll down and you should find Hoo St Werburgh.
I am interested to find out if these Turners are related to the famous artist Joseph Mallord William Turner as my Great Grandfather was a great artist in NZ and alot of what he did is simular to Joseph. Joseph was about the same age as John Turner and he came from London as well.
Thanks for a lovely website

I also attended sunday school and was confirmed at Hoo Church when Reverend Tuffin was there.I also remember vicar Norman before that. So lovely to see a site about the village I grew up in.

Regards to anyone who knows me or my family.

Comment: I was surprised to stumble across your site, and enjoyed very much the historical pieces included. While I live in the U.S., I have had one occassion to visit Hoo St. Werburgh and wander through your churchyard (my Baker ancestors are the same ones that long ago ran the Pottery in Hoo, many of whom are buried in your churchyard).

I traveled to Kent and spent a few days at the library in Rochester, viewing the baptismal records from Hoo St. Werburgh. Thes eare invaluable tools to Genealogists like myself, and while it may be far afield from the vision of your website, one suggestion I might have is to consider making these records accessible via the website. Scanning technologies exist today that would facilitate ready inclusion, and a great many folks in the immediate area could benefit from ready access to them. In some cases, I actually had to go to London to view the records.

A final suggestion: your church is a thing of beauty... a couple more pictures from different angles would be worth the effort.

God Bless you all!

My fathers mother was Eliza Everist, she married Mr Uriah Jordan and their first child was Lionel, my father. I visited your church on Monday June 2nd to take some pictures of the Everist Vault in the church-yard. The engravings are so very worn it is hard to make out just who is buried there. I wonder if you could give me a contact name of anyone who could give me details from old written church records as to who lies there?.
I live in Balham S.W. London and could come down anytime, I am retired and my time is my own.
I have had much fun in recent years on my family tree and the "Everist" branch is particularly interesting to me, thus the question.
I am also in contact with many Everist's world wide and maybe I could convince them to subscribe to a fund to do some restoration work on that vault.
I have added copise of the pictures I took to a very long E-Mail (the family tree, everist branch back to 1830) so expect some replies soon.

Regards and thanks in advance

Egerton-Warburton on his property near Mt. Barker WA. The chapel is used for candle lit weddings and christenings. Apparently there are 32 religious buildings dedicated to St. Werburgh (29 in England, 1 in Ireland, 1 in Zambabwe and this one in WA) I am setting out on a pilgrimage (via the Internet)to find them all, Hoo has been first. Our memories of our super wedding in the church in 1966 have flooded back.
Would publishing records of Marriages taken place in the church ever be contemplated or would that be too personal for the internet.

Comment: I came upon your site when 'browsing the net' and was excited to learn that one of your bells (the Fourth, dating from 1662) has an inscription 'JOHN PEETT Churchwarden'. PEETT is my maiden name and family members are tracing the family history, so this discovery is tantalising. I have emailed Arthur Vidgeon but he can add no further information about Mr PEETT. Is there anyone reading this who can offer any further details about the PEETT family - either in the 1660s or later (up to the present in fact), in or around Hoo or other areas in England? Even a mention of the churchwardens of that period would help as would anything on the history of the Hoo area. Does anyone know where the parish records are held? Absolutely anything may be of interest.

By the way, the website is impressive. Congratulations.

Mary.

Comment: I moved to Gillingham from the Isle of Sheppey in 1977 I was 13 years old. I had lovely views of the river and Hoo and for many years wanted to visit the church that I could see in the
distance. I recently returned to the area for a funeral and
my Husband and I went for a ride in the car and we came across "my church".
I rushed out the car and touched the stonework (I am sane really)and we walked around the churchyard. I was so happy to finally visit the church that I had seen for many years from my window. Long gone are the days when churches could be left open and unattended.
I will visit again and finally get to see inside. Thanks to the website I have managed to find out the history of my church! Many Thanks

Comment: Seeing your pages brought back wonderful memories of when I was in the choir back in the late 60's. It is good to see that the church community is still flourishing.

Comment: I lived in Hoo from 1958 to 1973, but my parents, Rita and Peter Carey continued to live there until just this year.

Whenever I visit Hoo, I like to go down near the church if I can. I have many memories of it; sunday school, church parades, hiding behind gravestones etc!

An interesting website.

E-mail me if you know me!

Comment: As for others, we randomly selected Hoo as we used to live there too. Now in Australia since 1966. Think of Hoo often. My parents, Marian (nee Toogood) & Ted were married in the Hoo church and their 50th coming up next year. Marian lived in Hoo from when she was aged 10 after shifting from London just before the War. Met Ted who was in the Army at the time, Bell's Lane Barracks. If anyone knows us please feel free to e-mail us. Like the site!

Comment: Just found your site by chance. Used to live in the area and after a random seach on Hoo St Werburgh found yourselves. Nice site. A bit surreal for someone like me who knows nothing whatsoever about bellringing, but keep up the good work.
