Introduction
The oldest "Church History of St.Werburgh, Hoo" known to exist was compiled in relatively
recent years by Mary Moseley in 1964. The booklet was updated in 1970 and again
in 1981 by the same author. She took her references from:
- Archaeological Horizons in the North Kent Marshes – John H. Evans, F.S.A., F.R.G.S.
- Rambles around Churches – Henry Smethem
- Hasted's Kent of 1798
- The Gentlemen's Magazine of June 1840
- The Forgotten Saxon Nunnery of St.Werberg at Hoo – Gordon Ward, M.D., F.S.A.
- And various newspaper cuttings.
The most recent history was compiled and written by Des Worsdale in 1992. In addition
to the above references, his acknowledgements include:
- Church Bells of Kent - J. C. Stahlsmidt
- Churches of Kent, Sussex and Surrey – Rev. Arthur Hussey
- Kentish Brasses (1905) – W. D. Belcher
- Kent County Archives at Maidstone and Strood
As with any old building, alterations, additions and improvements are made as time
progresses, so even the most recent Church history was partly outdated when the
idea for this web site was born. It was therefore necessary to re-write and update
some of the facts previously written. For me, this task was considerably easier
than the previous writers as I had plenty of published material at hand. My grateful
thanks go to Des Worsdale, who unselfishly has allowed us to publish much of his
1992 history, sadly no longer in print.
Every care has been taken in the compilation of this history but no responsibility
is accepted for any errors. However, if anyone does find any mistakes, errors and
omissions or can add anything of interest, we will be very pleased to hear from
them.
Arthur D Vidgeon.
